DIY Glitter sneakers!

Hi Friends,

One of my favorite sayings is “leave a little sparkle wherever you go”… probably because I feel like everything in my life needs to sparkle and have glitter or sequins! I had some silver glitter Converse for almost ten years and I wore them so much that they wore out. I literally would wear them almost everywhere…. Disneyland, concerts, the park playing with my nephew, or just around the house to clean. The inside lining is almost gone, they have giant holes on the side and all the glitter has  practically fallen off. I was devastated! So I went on a hunt for similar shoes, I knew they wouldn’t be the exact same since they were so old, but I was convinced I could find something close to what I had. My search was a bust! I couldn’t find anything like what I wanted for a reasonable price. I knew I didn’t want to spend $100 or more on them so I decided to make them!

They were so easy to make….. Seriously! I found sneakers for $15 at target and I already had the rest of the supplies I needed. If you don’t have any of the supplies, honestly you can still make these shoes for about $25. You can find the Mod Podge for about $5 and fine glitter for around $4 at Michaels. Less if you have coupons! SO cheap compared to the $100 pairs I found online!

Supplies Needed:

  • 1 pair of Plain canvas sneakers with laces removed
  • fine glitter in color of choice (I used silver so they could match any outfit or occasion)
  • Mod Podge in gloss finish ( I know the picture has matte finish but I didn’t realize I grabbed the wrong bottle until after I took the pic)
  • acrylic paint in coordinating color to your glitter
  • paint brush

Step One

  • Paint a base coat on the shoes using the acrylic paint. One coat is plenty. You will cover it with the glitter so it wont show. It’s just to give the shoes a base that’s the same color as your glitter. Then let them dry. I put the first shoe  I painted in the sun while I did the second shoe and then stuck the second shoe in the sun while I made the mixture in step two.

Step Two

  • Make your Mod Podge Glitter Mixture. I wanted mine to be extremely sparkly so I added about half my bottle of glitter to about a cup on Mod Podge. Remember to mix it in something disposable. It won’t wash out! You can add whatever amount of glitter you want according to how sparkly you want your shoes.

Step Three

  • Take the first shoe you did your base coat on and paint the entire shoe with the glitter mixture. Don’t forget the tongue! Then do the same thing with the second shoe. Set them out to dry for about 20 minutes.

Step Four

  • Repeat step three for a second coat of glitter and let them dry for about an hour. Less if you can set them in the warm sun.

Step Five

  • Lace up your shoes with the laces that the shoes came with or take ribbon the same length as your laces and use that!

*Sealing them is not necessary but if you really want to you can add another layer of gloss Mod Podge or an acrylic sealer over the top before lacing them up.

*If you got glitter on the shoes base or the eyelets for the laces, don’t worry…. it just peels off!

That’s It! Now you have a cute sparkly pair of sneakers. They are inexpensive to make and a quick and easy project!

I hope everyone has fun making these adorable sneakers. Until next time……
